Child Shopping Spree

In September Soroptimist of Hanford partners with local school districts to provide a back-to-school shopping experience for children in need. School districts select the students, volunteers & Soroptimists chaperone the students for a morning of shopping and breakfast. The children come away from this event with new clothes and shoes and sometimes the first shopping experience. Their faces light up with joy! This experience builds self-esteem and confidence as they begin their school year.

Below are a few pictures from the 2022 event at JCPenney. Knights of Columbus graciously prepared breakfast for the children, parents and Soroptimist members.

Volunteers Needed!

This event requires over 200 community volunteers to assist as chaperones.  If interested, please follow the link below for more information and to register as a volunteer.

Safety First

In accordance with Soroptimist International’s Child Protection Policy, a sex offender background check must be performed on all volunteers working with children. Fulfilling this requirement will require an additional step to your shopping chaperone registration process.

Once you have registered as a shopping chaperone with your Hanford Soroptimist, you will receive a registration confirmation email. Your Hanford Soroptimists have contracted with an online screening service, which will run your sex offender background check. A link to the screening service’s website will be provided in your instructions email. It will only take a few minutes of your time to provide the necessary information. There will be a $10 charge to run your 50-state sex offender background check. We ask that you pay this by credit card. You will be reimbursed the $10 fee by Hanford Soroptimist. Reimbursement will be made by cash when you sign in at the Spree.

We hope you understand the sex offender background check policy is intended to protect the safety and welfare of the student participants. Volunteers may not participate in the Spree without clearance.

More Ways To Help?

We are also seeking financial sponsors to provide funding for this event. You can help by spreading the word and/or making a personal donation. Soroptimist International is a 501(c)(3), Tax ID #94-6107889, and your donation is tax-deductible. 100% of your contribution will go towards providing clothes for the kids.

What to Expect

Your experience as a Spree chaperone will start early in the morning at the designated location. Upon checking in, you will be paired with a child entering Kindergarten through Junior High. You will receive an information card on your child with clothing sizes and school uniform information if required. After a quick introduction, you and your child will enjoy a pancake breakfast together, compliments of the Knights of Columbus. When you’re done eating, it’s time to shop!

The store is open exclusively for Spree participants, and there are plenty of store employees and Soroptimists on hand to help. Your job as a volunteer is to assist your child in selecting clothing and shoes if needed for their new school year. Once your purchase is made, chaperones stay with their child until they are reunited with their responsible party.
